Chapter Eight

“YOU DON’T THINK...” Pip couldn’t find the words.

“Not the Henderson we knew. The Henderson we knew is dead.”

“Then, who is this?”

“Try not to think about it right now,” Nade said, struggling to follow his own advice. “It’ll lead no place worth visiting.”

Pip scratched nervously at her chin. Nade knew he would have to keep a close eye on her if he was going to be able to stop her from losing it completely. But then again, he was not faring much better himself.

After inspecting the weapons they’d salvaged from the corpses, Pip suggested they take the uniforms, too. With their deformities, they were under no illusion they’d be able to move freely, but at least they would be fully dressed.

A few moments later, they were back in the corridor, heading in the direction they believed the soldiers had come from, reasoning they must have come from another part of the facility, which would hopefully lead to the exit. The fingertip Nade had lost—his trigger finger—was roughly cut, but had not bled at all. The end of the stump was a strange shade of orange and numb like his leg. He felt sick to his stomach thinking of the possible implications of this. He was still lost in thought when Pip slammed an arm across his chest, stopping him in his tracks. “Look.”

Up ahead was a set of sliding metal doors and a small panel with two buttons on the wall.

They had found the elevator.

Pip fired a single shot, dispatching the camera as it began to turn towards them before hitting the call button. She kept her gun trained on the doorway as they waited for the metal shell to arrive. Nade turned and sighted his rifle down the corridor behind them. His aim was shaky. If he were to open fire, he knew he would be lucky to land a single round. The kickback alone would probably throw him off balance thanks to his leg, and now he had to contend with a missing trigger finger, too.

A bell pinged behind the closed door, and Nade couldn’t resist looking over his shoulder as the heavy door slid open.

Empty.

They both breathed a sigh of relief and stepped inside.

There were two floors they could select: B, the one they were currently on, and G, presumably ground level, which Nade hammered promptly. The door slid shut, and the lift began to move.

“What’s the first thing you’re going to do when we get out of here?” Pip asked, leaning against the back wall. The rifle, pointing at the floor, hung from her hand, and her tentacle slowly curled and unfurled at the tip.

“Call this shit-show in. Police, army...whatever it takes. You?”

“See if I can do anything about this thing.” She waved the pulsing appendage in front of his face.

The lift bumped to a halt as the little bell alerted them of their arrival. They readied themselves for the worst, backing up against the rear of the elevator and raising their rifles. Nade caught a
